Since its inception in Fall 2018, Bruins for Accessible Resources (BAR) operates with the purpose of providing individuals experiencing homelessness in the UCLA campus and Westwood vicinity with improved access to critical resources.
According to the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority 58,936 individuals in LA county were homeless and of these people only 14,722 were sheltered in 2019 [1]. This marks a +12% change from 2018, demonstrating the severity of the homelessness issue and the current insufficiency in resources faced at addressing this endemic. The effects of this current lack of resources is seen in our own community – Westwood. LA city district 5, which encompasses the Westwood neighborhood, has seen a 23% increase in homeless individuals from 883 individuals in 2018 to 1,087 in 2019[1].
Through collaborating with both student-run and community-based organizations, BAR hopes to address the needs of the growing homeless population in Westwood by improving the accessibility of critical resources that are currently lacking in the area.
